In preparation for some work I'll be doing this semester, I'm curious...
How important is music to your life?

Give me your top 3 reasons why you listen to the music that you listen to...

Does it compliment whatever mood you are trying to obtain?
Does it inspire you?
Does it motivate you?
Does it comfort you?

If it's not important to your life at all... then please take the time to briefly explain why.

One of three major reasons why I listen to music is the brief emotional response I get from hearing a song. Some songs can make me really happy or some songs can make me sad or depressed. I guess the melody and lyrics of sad songs cause me to like the song in spite of the negative mood or negative feelings the song might give me. The second major reason why I listen to music would be how some songs can motivate me to do certain things better such as drive, fu¢k, exercise, or of course dance. I guess the basic fundamental reason why I listen to music is entertainment.

Music is very important in my life. It inspires me briefly, but mostly music serves as entertainment. I love all types of music, but what I think I love the most about music is how it serves as a soundtrack to your life. It's amazing how you can hear a song, and hearing this particular song will immediately take you back to a certain place and time. For instance, I get really sad when I hear "Seven Whole Days" by Toni Braxton because this was the song that was playing on the radio when I riding to the hospital when my grandfather died. I love the song but every time I hear it takes me back to my mom's Gran LeMans (Yeah I'm old).

I appreciate the responses.
Hanzo, I feel you on the soundtrack...

I remember DMX stating that he can remember years/cities where he's lived by thinking about what album he purchased or what song was hot at the time.

I find myself doing the same thing.

This reminds me of the day I made a serious life decision after listening to an Erykah Badu song.

I really hated the job I had. I was sitting in traffic, on the phone with my sister after a particularly horrible day and I was complaining to her how stagnated I felt at that job. She asked me if I ever considered going back to school to get my MBA. I felt that it was too late since I had been out of school for five years. She told me that if people in their fifties and sixties can go back to school, I can do it too. After I got off the phone with her, I turned up my car stereo (I was listening to Erykah Badu's "Mama's Gun" album) and the song "Time's A Wastin" was playing. The lyrics "Time's a wastin/Don't you take your time young man/Keep on driftin/Ain't no telling where you'll land" hit me like a ton of bricks.

I registered in business school three days later and I received my MBA two years later. Now I'm in a much better job that I love and to this day every time I feel a little down, I listen to "Time's A Wastin".

My music keeps me in check when I'm about to go off on my boss, my wife, my kids, my girlfriend, my mother, my grand kids, my homies and my brothers and sister. My music is my release be it gospel or ole skool.
