Is no longer recognizable by my laptop (Windows Vista Basic) or Itunes.
I have the latest edition of Itunes.
I've reset.
I've retried.
I've restarted.
I've reinstalled.
I may or may not reformat.
See... I've got over 150 GB on it.
Now... if I reformat it, I lose that because I don't save anything in Itunes.
Most of my disks are on my external HD, though.
My question is... has anyone ever reformatted their Ipod?
Does this guarantee that it will be recognized on my PC and I can refill it with music and continue to update it?
I don't want to reformat this thing and render it useless because it will have no music and be unrecognizable.
I may be better off just leaving it be.
I can still charge it with my wall adapter (and it recharges via my USB port).
Maybe it's time to get a Zune for any new music...
dang how yall just gon leave CD hangin like this? lol
but nall I never had to do it, Ive had my Ipod for about 4 years and fixed every problem with a soft reset
but since you usin windows I can tell you how to take all yo music off yo ipod and save it so that you wont lose some of your music

Something I found:
Try turning off your computer and rebooting with the ipod already plugged in. You might need to re-install your USB drivers, or enable your USB ports.
This is from apple's support site:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
The part about re-installing or updating the USB drivers works for troubleshooting almost any USB device.
Locate the iPod in Device Manager
1. Connect iPod to the computer.
2. Quit iTunes if it launches.
3. On the Start menu, click Control Panel.
4. In Control Panel, open Administrative Tools. Note: If you don't see Administrative Tools, look at the left column in Control Panel for a link that says, "Switch to Classic View," and click it.
5. Double click the Computer Management shortcut.
6. In the left column, click on Device Manager.
7. In the right column, click the plus (+) icon next to Universal Serial Bus controllers to expand
8. Locate the iPod . In some cases one of the entries will have "iPod" in its name. If no such entries are present, the iPod is most likely represented by "USB Mass Storage Device."
Note: A red "X" appearing next to the iPod's entry in Device Manager indicates this device is disabled. To enable this device, right-click its entry in Device Manager and choose Enable from the shortcut menu.
* You also might try updating your usb port with any new drivers.*

Dang, you don't save anything in your Itunes Library? Because yes, reformatting your Ipod will erase everything on your Ipod but all you would have to do is resync and it should load all your data back on it.

your music should be backed up in a system file somewhere if you go to edit> preferances> advanced at the top it should tell you what file all your stuff is saved in or if you want to get all your music off your ipod use a program called IMToo I had to use it before when my PC caught a virus and erased everything to get my music off my ipod to start my itunes all over

You know what, I just broke one of my cardinal rules of troubleshooting as far as establishing a problem.
1). What kind/model is your Ipod ?
2). How long has it been doing this.

Thanks for all the help, folks.
At least the Ipod is still playing, so I'm good.
I'll just get a Zune for any music that I want (on the go) that comes out in the future...
I'll probably do that next month when I buy Wale's album.

ew a zune...
if u do reformat, your computer will recognize it as a brand new iPod...
i say reformat if you have most of the music backed up on ur external...
also... have u ever tried plugging it into another computer just to make sure its not having that error with just your laptop?
