I have to agree. It is rather hard to pick one favorite but Fight Club ranks REALLY high.

Two other movies that rank high for me is "A Soldier's Story" and "Harlem Nights".

"Harlem Nights" is just a classic. It never won any awards but you would be hard pressed to ever see a cast like this ever assembled again or another quality comedy movie that's funny from start to finish like this one. Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx, Danny Aiello, Michael Lerner, Della Reese, Jasmine Guy, "Sunshine", Arsenio Hall, Charlie Murphy...

"A Soldier's Story" was excellent as a play and as a movie. Sergeant Waters played by Adolph Caesar was perfect. It was unfortunate that he passed before he received the true accolades he deserved.

My most favorite line in the movie by Sergeant Waters:

"Them Nazis ain't all crazy. Whole lot of people just can't seem to fit in to where things seem to be going. Like you, CJ. See, the Black race can't afford you no more. There used to be a time, we'd see someone like you singin', clownin', yassuh-bossin'... and we wouldn't do anything. Folks liked that. You were good. Homey kind of nig*$#. When they needed somebody to mistreat, call a name or two, they paraded you. Reminded them of the good old days. Not no more. The day of the Geechee is gone, boy. And you're going with it."

Genius!

Yeah, Fight Club is definitely top 5 all-time.

City Of God has to be one of my favorite movies.

My favorite movie recently has to be Slumdog Millionaire.

There's so many movies I love, so it's hard to choose. If I had to choose one though, it would have to be "Night of the Living Dead" (the original). The movie is so well done: from the way Romero created a powerful black leading man (in the 1968 no less) to all the social commentary on racism to the atmosphere to the cinematography.

There's so many great movies though: Saving Private Ryan, The Fifth Element, Event Horizon, Last House on the Left (the original), Do The Right Thing, Bamboozled, Hotel Rwanda, Seven Samurai, Rear Window (the original), Crouching Tiger....

And I saw "Where the Wild Things Are" yesterday. I'm already looking forward to the Bluray, so that I can watch it again and again.

I have a question. What takes a movie from a great movie to one of the best ever? Some of the movies that people are naming are new. To me a movie that fits in the best ever category is a movie that has stood the test of time. I just don't see a movie that came out in 2008 being a best ever type of movie.

Thoughts? Opinions?

The original question was to name the greatest movie you have ever seen. I know it's a matter of opinion, but some of these movies probably shouldn't be in the conversation for greatest movies ever. Maybe my criteria is a little different but a movie has to say something important for me to put it into that "great" category. A movie has to be more than entertaining, it has to have some substance. Just my opinion though.
