I think this is the original story. But the number is now 13 dead, 30 injured. Sources say that Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan said to have been targeted because of his religion or even race since he has been in the army, and other sources say that it was motivated by some religious ideology and did not believe in the war in Iraq but was just ordered to go. What ever the case may be, this is a tragedy. My heart goes out to the victims families.

I hear there's talk of reinforcing the draft....I'll ship my kids to Canada before i let the military take them.

But yea, this is some sad shit.

As many family, friends and just people I know who have done multiple tours here lately...it's very sad. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.

So sad that people that willingly serve our country to ensure that we can sit on our computers looking at CC were killed not by the enemy, but by some guy who was supposed to be taking care of them.

As an aside, I'm for a draft if it is administered fairly. Maybe if more powerful people had some "skin" in the game, they would care more about how their decisions affect other citizens.

That's how it's done in some other countries, the ruling families' children are required to serve in the military.

I really feel bad about the tragedy at Fort Hood. Then the shooting in Orlando the next day made it even worse. My father, who served as infantry during Vietnam, always said that the military was the most racist institution in America. Maybe there is some truth to that. Even still, there's still no justification for what Hasan did. I'm just glad he's still alive so he can answer for his crimes.

My Dad is a WW2 veteran and has said the same thing about the military being one of the most racist and sexist institutions in the country but regardless, Hasan's actions are unwarranted. My heart goes out to the families who have been affect by this tragic event.

This war would have ended a year or two ago if either a draft or 20% of Congress had members of their families on the front lines. War is more "real" when you are personally connected.

On the other hand, imagine what Hasan heard on a daily basis from soliders who were stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. These men and women are coming home with some of the worst life experiences we could ever conceive. Hasan's job as a psychiatrist was to listen and help them through it. The stories he heard will never make the news.

My personal opionion is that this guy snapped (obviously) and either decided that no more American troops are going to kill people like him or he felt that death was better than going to Iraq and Afghanistan and considered the shootings mercy killings.

I also believe this is an isolated incident where one guy snapped. People like Senator Lieberman are really jumping the gun with statements that this is a terrorist attack. He would not be saying that if Hasan were not of Middle Eastern descent.

Also, there is a bunch of talk on other blogs where many people believe that Hasan is a scapegoat. Their belief is that multiple soliders revolted and started shooting in protest of going back to the Middle East.

Either way, we may never know.
