This song and statement was made to show black people it's okay to be proud of who we are. It's a statement for black people. Of course people who aren't black won't understand it, and quite frankly it's not for them to understand. The statement is not about making anybody else feel inferior, everybody should have pride in themselves, but this statement was aimed at black people a time where we were looked down on cause of our race.

James Brown was being attacked at the time. It was shortly after King's Death and he was making a large political stamp. And during the run for presidency he supported a candidate that the black community didn't support . There were riots, a community suffering loss , anger, frustration, fear. And Black people at that time were either looked at as mindless savages who'd loot and picket or just less than human. A symbol of hope was taken away , one who was fighting for equal rights. It was a lot more than about JUST blacks but it was a black movement. the song I'm black and i'm proud relit a bit of that lost hope and restored people's faith in a music icon they were starting to call "sold brother number one". anyone see that documentary on Vh1? it covers a lot of this.

The funny thing about this is that James Brown wrote in his autobiography back in 1986:

So instead of claiming "white pride" they can have pride in being Italian. Or Irish.

However because of slavery, a lot of blacks in this country don't know what part of Africa they hail from. So that's why the term "black" or "african-american" has become such a blanket statement.

How many US born blacks do you know that know whether or not they are Ethiopian, or Ughandan etc..

Overall it just seems to me that it breaks down like this:

Any who... to answer the original question it means nothing to me. There should not be a since of pride just for being black, just as being born a latino should not provide a sense of pride to a latino, or being born white should not provide a sense of pride to an Irishman, an Italian, or an Englishman. One should be proud of behavior or achievements that warrant this sense of pride. Nationality or ethnicity through accidents (for lack of a better word) of birth should not provide one with any sense of pride.
